BELGRADE - The International Congress on Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning convened for its 40th year on Dec. 2 in Belgrade, Serbia.

After a visiting children’s preschool choir serenaded those attending, Serbian Minister of Energy, Dr. Petar Škundrć, officially opened the Congress.

The Congress shared ASHRAE President Gordon Holness’ presidential theme of Sustaining Our Future by Rebuilding Our Past. Dr. Branislav Todorovic, the president of the Serbian Society for Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning, reminded the attendees, representing 20 countries from around the world, that the choir of the youngest generation represented the spirit of a sustainable future: HVAC&R engineers are not working for current generation, but for the generations of their children and children’s children.

ASHRAE President Gordon Holness also addressed over 400 Congress attendees as a representative of ASHRAE.

Representatives from the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR), the European association REHVA, Italian AICARR and British CIBSE were also in attendance for the Congress’s 40th anniversary.

Over the course of three days, 75 papers were presented, including 11 presented by young engineers, undergraduate and graduate students. These young participants came from four Serbian universities, as well as far away as Turkey and Austria.

Distinguished ASHRAE lecturer, Tom Lawrence, presented the final lecture of the Congress on energy certification of buildings, as well as details on Standard 189.1.
