The introductory lectures
The introductory lectures were given by visiting lecturers. Mat Santamouris, a professor from the University of Athens, talked about the current situation in Europe regarding energy consumption and environment quality in the building sector, and presented the results of the research relating to Greek cities and towns.
Dr. Arsen Melikov from Bulgaria discussed efficiency and effects on the improvement of indoor environment in case of individual control of ventilation, whereby comfort conditions are improved and energy is significantly saved in comparison to conventional central systems.
The leading researcher from the University of Illinois, Urbana, USA, our colleague Predrag Hrnjak, presented the recent results of his research concerning the use of carbon dioxide as refrigerant.
Mr. Hashem Akbari from the United States, director of the Heat Island Group, talked about the manner of decreasing the heating in buildings during summer, especially in the regions with a tropical climate. He discussed the manners of reducing high temperature in towns, requiring the refrigerating units and systems and large amount of energy. He presented the results obtained when roofs and street surfaces were covered with special coatings that increase solar radiation reflection from surfaces and decrease absorption, thus reducing the heat loss in cities and buildings, whereby cooling demands were reduced.
On behalf of the group of his colleagues, Professor Agis Ppapadopoulos from the University of Thessaloniki described the energy performance of buildings in his country..
Round table: HVAC&R systems for »clean« rooms
The group of lectures on HVAC&R systems in the so-called “clean” or “white” rooms was initiated by the general patron – TERMOVENT Komerc, who engaged his business partners, experts and equipment manufacturers: CMR from London ( lecturer Clements Richter), Belgium companies “Jakobs“ (John van Marcke and Rudi De Hertogh) and “Frizer“ (Alan Deprez) as well as “Chemigingineering“ from Germany (Thomas Friedman), who talked about experience in the field of clean rooms. It was a unique “round table” with alternate presentations made by lecturers by specific aspects. These lectures offered to the audience very useful information and instructions on digester control and, in general, information on the methods of air supply, available systems and HVAC&R design for “white” rooms, humidity control therein and monitoring and testing of the system operation or “commissioning“. This group of lecturers was attended by almost 300 people, congress participants and employees of the technical services of the domestic pharmaceutical industry and others who use such rooms of high-level hygiene in their business activities.
